Linux on the PS3

The truth of the matter is that most computer fanatics happen to be gamers as well. Its been a mutual relationship that existed for years and now it's even showing signs of crossing over to morph into another hybrid creature. We all love Linux and we wish we could take it anywhere and have it on any system .. seems now we can. Through my earlier articles I mentioned the prevalence and (hopefully) domination of Linux on the mobile scene. This has been made possible by the Google Android and Nokia's Maemo. Two very powerful platforms that show promise. Another company which showed interest ("somewhat") in the open source was Sony, but as we can see this was very short-lived. The Sony PlayStation 3 could be installed with Linux as another Operating  System that resides side by side the game OS. This in my Opinion was a major merit. Well unfortunately the new PlayStation Slim, has this feature removed, in order to minimize cost or prevent other companies benefiting from using the ps3 as a cheap cell processor, it doesn't matter what the reason is, the fact is that the new PS3 cannot install Linux.

On the other hand if you have an older model (generations  1-3), then you are in luck. As of now there are several alternatives to choose from, at this point there is Fedora, Gentoo, OpenSuse, Ubuntu, YellowDog and Debian.
The installation of various distro's differ greatly in methods of installation with some requiring you to manually create components, bootloaders or kernel patches. In this article we'll discuss installing Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) on the PS3.
Personally, I've installed Ubuntu and YDL only. From both experiences YDL intsllation is easier.YDL is also recommended for those who run their PS3 on HD displays.
Prerequisites: keyboard, mouse and Installation ISO
Installation Steps:
1. Obtain a copy of YDL from the link provided above and burn to DVD.
2.You need to create a partition where you'll install the OS, go to the XMB (PS3 dashboard)  go to Settings -> System Settings -> Format Utility and select the "Format Hard Disk" option. Select Custom and Allot 10GB to OtherOS and then initiate a quick format.
3.With YDL installing the bootloader, requires you to put in the iso whiles in the XMB go to Settings -> System Settings -> Install OtherOS. After a quick scan you'll need to start installation of the otheros.bld. After this the system would notify you on how to switch to the OtherOS option(go to Settings -> System Settings -> Default System, press the X button and select the "OtherOS" entry. Select YES when asked if you want to leave the PS3 system and start the OtherOS)
4.Switching to OtherOS would make the PS3 reboot and then initialize the Linux boot Loader.
5.At the end of the boot, you'll see a kboot prompt, you can specify your video resolution or press "Enter" for automatic detection. Supported resolution: install_ps3_480i, install_ps3_720p, install_ps3_1080i, install_ps3_1080p. Hit Enter After the resolution to proceed
6.By this time, you would have met Anaconda the red-hat installer. Proceed with the installation.
7.After the installation you can go back to the PS3 XMB by selecting  Start -> Applications -> Boot Game OS from the YDLs menu.

**note: you can go to the ps3 boot at the kboot by keying "ps3-boot-game-os". (Without the quotations)
Now why don't you try it? Chao.
